The Estevan Police Service has issued a warning about a scam that has popped up in the community.

A fraudster posing as a secret shopper representative sent a cheque to a person who deposited it, and then instructions were given for that person to send a portion of the money back.

The public is to be on the lookout for this type of scam as the unsuspecting victim sends money back to the fraudster before the cheque from the fraudster is cleared by the bank. When that cheque doesn’t clear the bank, then the victim is held accountable for the loss.

In other recent police news, the EPS received a call Nov. 24 regarding a vehicle that was speeding on the highway towards Estevan. The vehicle was located and the driver’s speed was clocked on radar at 152 kilometres per hour in the 100 km zone. The driver was subsequently charged under the Traffic Safety Act. The fine was $820 and the vehicle was impounded for seven days due to the excessive speed.

A complaint was received on Nov. 25 regarding snow in a south Estevan neighborhood being pushed from driveways into the street. The public is reminded that this is unlawful as per the City of Estevan bylaw.
