The Estevan Police Service (EPS) will be hosting a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) blitz July 18 and 19 in the Estevan area.

Police from around Saskatchewan will be working alongside partner agencies to identify traffic violations and take enforcement action. This two-day initiative will occur at various locations around Estevan.

Enforcement activities will focus on offences related to speeding, distracted driving, seatbelt use, unlicensed drivers and commercial vehicle standards. As usual, impaired driving enforcement will be a top priority.

“It’s more of a public awareness campaign in order to improve upon traffic safety around the province. Estevan was selected earlier in the year to be one of the locations to do it,” said Deputy Police Chief Murray Cowan.

This is not the first time STEP has been in Estevan.

“They are going to see a lot of police in the city over the next couple of days, and hopefully we don’t have to issue too many traffic tickets or violations,” said Cowan.

STEP is a multi-agency task force dedicated to improving traffic safety across Saskatchewan. Nearly 40 officers are expected to be involved in the Estevan blitz. Agencies involved in the blitz include municipal police agencies, the RCMP, combined traffic services units, the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol (SHP), Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Police, and representatives from SGI and the Ministries of Justice and Finance.

RCMP officers from the Yorkton, Swift Current, Rosetown, Fort Qu’Appelle, Broadview and  Moose Jaw detachments, and municipal officers from various cities are expected to be in Estevan.

“You’re going to see a lot of different police vehicles around,” said Cowan.
