A two-day, multi-agency traffic blitz hosted by the Estevan Police Service (EPS) on Thursday and Friday has wrapped up.

The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) included municipal agencies, the RCMP, Saskatchewan Highway Patrol, Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Police, and representatives from SGI and the Ministries of Justice and Finance.

Over the course of the two-day initiative, police issued a total of 115 traffic tickets, 166 warnings and 82 inspection tickets, citing defects with some of the vehicles. Eighty-three car seat inspections were also conducted.

There were no vehicle seizures or arrests made subsequent to any driving offences, outstanding warrants, or otherwise.

Deputy Police Chief Murray Cowan said that in the first day, they issued 68 charges, 91 warnings and 35 inspection tickets, and they also did 38 car seat inspections. On the second day, which ended at noon, there were 47 charges, 75 warnings and 47 inspection tickets, along with 48 car seat inspections.

Two car seats were given to people, courtesy of SGI.

“It went well overall. We were in various locations around the city,” said Cowan. “I’m sure a lot of people made note of those locations, but we picked some of the high-traffic areas and some of the arteries and main entrances into the city as well.

“I believe we had some inspection people out on the bypass around the city as well.”

Next week’s edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
