The ABC’s of Dementia presentation in Estevan attracted quite a bit of attention on Sept. 30. Thirteen people made it to the presentation, which was organized by the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan and facilitated by Jennifer Froese, first link co-ordinator with Sun Country Resource Centre, and Abby Wolfe, the public awareness co-ordinator for the Alzheimer Society.

Information about dementia, the changes in abilities, behaviour and communication it can cause, as well as the programs and services of the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan were provided.

An emphasis was made on a few key points. The first one being that dementia is about more than just memory. Second, Alzheimer’s disease is just one type of dementia. There are many more types that can present and progress differently because of the unique ways in which they affect the brain. Third, dementia does not just affect older individuals.

Facilitators also pointed out that the Alzheimer Society of Saskatchewan provides support and information to individuals affected by all types of dementia through their local Resource Centre, located in Estevan, and their toll-free Dementia Helpline (1-877-949-4141).

September was World Alzheimer Month, so this event was an excellent way to contribute to efforts to build awareness and to increase understanding.
