Emergency crews called to fire at former Sanjel building

Local emergency crews have been called to the former Sanjel building, at the intersection of Edward Street and Victoria Avenue in north-central Estevan. A fire was reported in the building just after 8 a.m. on Friday morning.

Local emergency crews have been called to the former Sanjel building, at the intersection of Edward Street and Victoria Avenue in north-central Estevan.

A fire was reported in the building just after 8 a.m. on Friday morning. Members of the Estevan Fire Rescue Service, the Estevan Police Service and the Estevan Emergency Medical Services were called to the scene. 

The fire department was still at the site at 2 p.m. 

The fire was under control as of the noon hour, but crews were working on accessing the roof, as the fire was still burning and could not be reached from the inside due to structural compromise. 

An ambulance with Estevan Emergency Medical Services was on the scene, but no injuries occurred. A school was was at the site, which was used to help the firefighters stay warm. 

An exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined.

Edward Street is blocked off from Souris Avenue North to Victoria Avenue. People are asked to avoid the area, as crews are expected to remain at the scene for some time.
