Due to a donation from the Estevan Quota Club, the Estevan Public Library has announced they will be launching Estevan’s first and only public seed library.

The seed library will be a place where community members are able to get seeds for free after filling out a membership form, and is run for public benefit.

The Estevan Seed Library will offer free access to seeds and seed saving education.

The project, which has been funded by the Estevan Quota Club, will be aimed at supporting local food security. Locally raised seeds are more resilient and better adapted to the soil and microclimate in the area.

The seed library will provide an opportunity for hobbyists and beginner gardeners to share seeds and other gardening resources, and to connect with other seed savers in the community.

The seed library will also provide opportunities to strengthen the community of gardeners and local eaters. The sustainable initiative increases plant resilience and allows individuals to reconnect with their food systems, and is designed to give residents the opportunity to garden in a cost-effective manner.

The official launch of the Estevan Seed Library is set for Thursday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m. at the Estevan Public Library.

Once the seed library is running members of the public are encouraged to bring any seeds they may wish to donate to the Estevan Public Library.
