Estevan Toastmasters hosted the Toastmasters Area Speech Contest on Nov. 2 at the Estevan Public Library.

Speakers from Estevan, Weyburn and Regina competed in two different contests. First was the table topics contest, which is a speech of about two minutes where the participants do not know their topic until the moment they are up on stage. Table topics presentations teach you how to think quickly and be able to provide a short speech with an opening, body and conclusion.

The second contest was the speech evaluation contest where an experienced speaker presents a five to seven-minute speech. The participants then evaluate and give feedback on the good points of the speech and provide any ideas for improvement as well.

Participants were Nolan Tide, Estevan Toastmasters, Judy Elias, Wey Better Speakers, Weyburn, Daniel Lonechild, UR Toastmasters, Regina, Randall Edge, Weekend Wordmasters, Regina, and Anita Schmidt, Speakers Corner, Regina.

Lutos Villanueva, a long-time member of Estevan Toastmasters, provided the test speech titled I’m to Brown for This, which was a humorous speech about his first arrival in Canada. The contest was very well attended with 26 people in for the event, including a large group from Division B in Regina who handled most of the judging.

Katharina Ulbrich from Estevan Toastmasters was the contest chair and handled all the duties as MC of the event. Anita Schmidt from Regina was the table topics winner and the winner for speech evaluation was Randall Edge from Regina.
