Grade 9 students from the Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) spent Wednesday learning outside of the classroom, thanks to the annual Take Our Kids to Work Day, which is offered throughout the country.

For Charles Gaignard and Diya Rabari, they didn’t spend the day with their parents, but they did spend it at a location that is of interest to them, the Estevan Public Library.

They stocked the library’s shelves with books, and sorted out the new books. They said it was an enjoyable experience.

“We’re doing our bins process,” said Lucas Reid, the branch manager of the Estevan Public Library. “It’s when we receive new items from southeast headquarters, and assign them, and then depending on where they’re going, shelve them for holds or shelve them in the regular collection.”

Most of the students’ time was spent with Reid, but they also helped other people at the library. They assisted with the story time program run by children’s programmer Christine Batke.

“There are little kids who improve their reading,” said Diya.

They finished the day by helping set up the library’s Christmas decorations.

Diya and Charles said they enjoyed shelving the books, and they would be interested in working at a library for a career.

“I like books, and it’s cozy and comfortable, with the warm feeling you get,” said Diya, whose brother Jay worked at the library a few years ago until he went to university.

Reid said it’s great to have a couple of young people at the library through Take our Kids to Work Day, and to show them what the library has to offer.
