A man who was a big part of the local business community for many years and who also loved to serve the city has died.

John Johnson passed away Oct. 30 at St. Joseph's Hospital at the age of 84.

Johnson started Johnson Plumbing and Heating in 1967. The business has grown to be one of the longest-standing and most successful in the Energy City, meeting the needs of customers on a daily basis.

It has also won awards for the service it provides to customers.

He eventually sold the business to his sons, but would still often be seen at the business.

Johnson also took an active role in the community, and was a member of the Estevan Lions Club for more than 50 years.

He said he joined the Lions because he wanted the opportunity to serve, and he thought there was a natural connection between his business and the Lions, since service is a big part of both organizations.

Johnson rarely missed a meeting, and he would call members to remind them of meetings, special events and other activities.

He also played a key role in fundraisers, including the Lions Lottery, and worked at Bingos and other community projects for the Lions.

A memorial service was held Nov. 2 at St. Paul’s United Church in Estevan.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years Audrey, his sons Brad and Rodger, his daughters Nadine Leclair and Barb O’Conchuir, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
