The Estevan Playparks season had its biggest event of the year Wednesday afternoon with the Last Splash Carnival at the Royal Heights Veterans Memorial Park.

Hundreds of people converged on the park for the festivities. One of the biggest attractions was the twin waterslides that were set up on the hill for children to slide or even roll down.

According to Anne Elder, who was the playparks co-ordinator for this year, they had so much more to offer during the carnival, including a photo booth, tattoo booth, face painting, balloon twisting, free popcorn and more.

“We updated our games and activities and had a little more to offer. We incorporated some face-painting this year, and some balloon twisting, which I think was a big hit, and we kept the big attractions.”

She was surprised with how many people attended, as it seemed to be a larger crowd than a year ago.

“It’s awesome to see them all smiling.”

The weather helped bring people out as well, she said, because it was a great day outside with low winds.

This summer was a great one for the playparks program, she said, not just for the swimming but also for the crafts and activities. There were some problems with the Rusty Duce Park paddling pool midway through the season that necessitated the closure of the pool, but she said they endured and the pool was eventually open again, with a great turnout.

A play leader worked at each park for the summer, and they also enjoyed the experience.

“We’ve had some returning ones and we’ve had some new leaders as well, and I think it’s a great summer for them to get to know their community and the kids around them as well.”

Elder said she always loves to see the kids smiling and laughing and having a blast at the parks.
