An Estevan man received a quick and positive response in his efforts to help those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, but went by the name of Paul Tergeist on Facebook, made a series of posts on the Garage Sale Estevan Facebook page last week.

“I had a couple of extra bucks and I was talking to an older gentleman at the Co-op who couldn’t find toilet paper,” he said.

The short supply of toilet paper caused Paul Tergeist to want to help others. He created kits that included toilet paper, canned food, a boxed meal, a protein-based food of some sort, beverages, and other foods and short-term necessities. The items were purchased in bulk, and he was able to get good value.

“I made them for single people, one single family. People that needed them,” he said.

Anybody who messaged him was supplied with one of the kits. Had he received more messages, he would have created more packages.

The Estevan Kinsmen Club donated money as well, which enabled him to support more people in need.

All of the efforts enabled him to make 16 packages. People he was able to help were very grateful for the gifts.

“I could tell they really needed it. So I’m glad I could help them out.”

If more people are in need, he said he would be willing to compile more kits, but right now he would like to focus on volunteering.

“It doesn’t take somebody with a lot of money. Anybody can do this. There are people that really need the help, and there aren’t resources available for those people. It takes $50 to change five people’s day, and really make a difference.”
