Oilfield construction firm MasTec Canada is closing its Estevan location.

Reached by email, Ryan Hopf, executive vice president, wrote on Fab. 21, “MasTec Canada continues to have operations across Western Canada with regional offices in British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Our Oil & Gas Services division in both Swift Current and Estevan, have been working tirelessly to adapt to the local market and engage our customers with a meaningful value proposition.

“Late last year, we restructured our team in southern Saskatchewan in an attempt to add flexibility to our crews and reduce overhead costs. While that decision did create more opportunities for our employees, maintaining the expense of a local office in Estevan could, unfortunately, no longer be justified.

“The MasTec Canada Saskatchewan operations will now be in Swift Current, with the majority of our Estevan-based employees having the opportunity to continue working for MasTec Canada throughout the central and southern parts of the province. As a longtime contributor to the Saskatchewan economy, MasTec Canada looks forward to continued dialogue with industry, government, and local communities on how best to support the region."

Formerly known as Big Country, MasTec had a shop just off the Shand Road on the east side of Estevan.

The announcement comes on the heels of an announcement  earlier in the week that the Westmoreland Estevan coal mine would be laying off up to 25 unionized employees, citing reduced coal sales. The mine asked for volunteers for early retirement or voluntary layoffs before finalizing that number.
