Local voters will have plenty of options to choose from in the upcoming civic election.

The deadline to file nominations was Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m. There will be two candidates for mayor and 11 more for city councillor on Estevan city council.

Incumbent Roy Ludwig will be seeking a third consecutive term as mayor. He is being challenged by first-time candidate Ray Walton.

Two people filed for councillor on the final day for nominations: Mark Henderson and Tony Sernick.

The rest of the field includes incumbent councillors Travis Frank and Shelly Veroba, and first-time candidates Blaine Chrest, Lindsay Clark, Rebecca Foord, Geoff Thiessen, Kirsten Walliser, Bernadette Wright and Allan Yergens.

In the RM of Estevan, Terry Keating has been acclaimed to a second term as reeve.

But there will be elections in Divisions 1, 3 and 5.

In Division 1, incumbent Councillor Lorne Jahn is being challenged by Jeff Mack, and in Division 3, incumbent Councillor Dennis Blackburn will face Kevin Daoust. As for Division 5, Tania Hlohovsky Andrist, Mona Dukart and Dakota Michael are vying for the seat. Michael was the most recent to file.

The elections for 2, 4 and 6 will be in 2022.

The civic election for both the City of Estevan and the RM of Estevan, and all other municipalities, will be Nov. 9.

It appears there won’t be elections needed for the school boards. There are two seats for Estevan trustees on the South East Cornerstone Public School Division board; they are to be filled by newcomers Eric McCrimmon and Kevin Keating.

As for the Holy Family Roman Catholic Separate School Division’s board, incumbent Karen Melle and newcomer Beckey Franke appear to be the Estevan trustees.

The only way in which there might be a school board election is if one of those candidates were to withdraw their papers by Thursday’s 4 p.m. deadline, which would result in a second call for nominations. If nobody withdraws, then the school board candidates will be acclaimed.
