Gale Tytlandsvik has spent several years maintaining and promoting the Garden Park on Fourth, the narrow and peaceful park located to the west of the Estevan Salvation Army’s building.

Her latest effort to attract people is Coffee in the Park, a weekly social at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesdays. A few people turned out for the first get-together on May 29.

“We had a lovely little visit,” said Tytlandsvik.

She selected 7:30 a.m. because she thought it was an ideal time to socialize. And while she has a lot of interest, a lot of people she talked to about it are already at work by that point in the day.

Some people do go to the park for lunch, she said, and she didn’t want to have it in the evening, since people get busy with activities involving their family and other needs.

“We’re all too busy to stop for a moment and smell the flowers,” said Tytlandsvik. “I think we need to do that. And connect with … people again.”

In the future, she expects she will serve small energy bites to people who attend Coffee in the Park.

Tytlandsvik said a lot of people still don’t know the park exists, so she decided to host these morning coffee times.

“I just like getting people together and out,” she said with a laugh.

People are supportive of the idea, and Tytlandsvik hopes to attract more people to the coffee socials.

The park looks good this year, she said. Tytlandsvik planted two weeks earlier than normal, because there wasn’t any frost in the forecast. A couple of plants died in the winter, so she has to replace them, but the flowers are further along at this time of year than they normally would be.

“I’d like to do some painting in there, which I did not get done last year, but I’d certainly like to get it done this year, and, as usual, I’d like to find some more unique plants to put in there.”

A garden tour that will take local residents to gardens throughout the community is scheduled for the end of June. It serves as a fundraiser for the park.

One person who attended Coffee in the Park suggested she add some bird feeders and perhaps a butterfly box for the park.

Coffee in the Park is slated to continue until June 25, but Tytlandsvik hopes it will also happen in the summer months.
