Some details are starting to emerge about the resurfacing project that is scheduled to take place on Souris Avenue South/Highway 47 in Estevan this year.

Estevan MLA Lori Carr, who is also the minister responsible for Highways and Infrastructure, said the ministry is slated to resurface the highway during the 2019 construction season. The affected area is from Fourth Street to the junction with Highway 18. It’s approximately 2.6 kilometres in length.

The cost is approximately $780,000, including a contribution of $150,000 from the city. If curb and gutter replacement or line painting is required, the total project cost will increase by approximately $250,000, including an additional $125,000 contribution from the city.

The funding is through the 2019/20 Urban Highway Connector Program (UHCP). Carr said the city would have applied to receive funding through the program.

Projects to be supported through the connector program are prioritized based on need, and she said it was Estevan’s turn in the queue.

Carr said people know what Souris Avenue South can be like in the spring when they drive down the hill between Fourth Street and Perkins Street. Potholes become a problem, but the city has done a good job of handling them in the past couple of years.

“I think this is pretty exciting for the City of Estevan. Whenever you can partner like this with the province to get your projects done, I think it’s a good news story,” said Carr.

The ministry of highways and infrastructure has already included 100 meters of work within Estevan on Highway 18 due to rutting.

Further details on the project are expected to be announced as the spring progresses.
