Summer camps important to the family centre

The Estevan Family Resource Centre has been offering opportunities for kids to have fun and keep their minds engaged this summer through their summer programs.

The sessions started in early July with the day camps, with such themes as Astronauts in Space. The camps have included Olympics Week. Boys Week and Girls Week, and they’ve also had Sweet Shop and Kids in the Kitchen camps.

They still have a science week that will offer lessons about plants, dinosaurs and the body, among other topics. Art week will teach children about different mediums, including painting and chalk, and help them explore different things.

Mackenzie Holman and Sarah Leverton are the instructors for this year’s programs. They said the numbers have been pretty good, as the camps have been filling up.

“Our one that we have this week (Aug. 6-9), we have 10 spots, and we actually ended up having 11,” said Holman, who was one of last year’s instructors. “It seems like the kids are having fun. Lots of them are coming back.”

But they have had a lot of different kids coming, too, so the youths have been able to make new friends and learn new things. In the case of the cooking camp and the Sweet Treats camp, which taught baking, they get to know how to prepare certain foods.

“I know a lot of the kids ended up making dessert and stuff like that for their families with the stuff that we did,” she said.
Leverton is in her first year with the camps. She loves spending time with the children and helping them learn new things.

“I just love getting to work with the kids. It’s a good experience for me and I’m really excited for the rest of the summer.”

Children have learned new things, and are showing their creativity.

“We’re teaching them how to be more creative, more unique in thinking their own way. We give them something to do and they run with it. It’s so cool to see how unique they are and how they take things we give them and turn them into their own.”

The feedback has been positive. Many kids will say they can’t wait to come back the following week’s camps, or how they hope the same camp will be offered next year.
