The City of Estevan celebrated Canada Day Wednesday night with a big fireworks show.

A thunderstorm rolled through the city just before 9 p.m., causing the fireworks to be delayed. But at 10:30 p.m., the show began, to the delight of those who watched it.

People were encouraged to watch the show from home and most people did just that. However, some came out to the Estevan Exhibition grounds, the Estevan Leisure Centre parking lot and other locations to watch the display, while respecting social distancing.

Spectators cheered and honked their horns once the fireworks were finished.

Bienfait has traditionally held Canada Day celebrations for the area, including the fireworks, but those were postponed this year due to COVID-19. The various Canada Day festivities in Bienfait traditionally attracted thousands of people. Bienfait hopes to have an event later this year.

After Bienfait made their announcement, the City of Estevan announced they were stepping in to host the event.

Next week's edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
