There were no cases of COVID-19 diagnosed among young people in southeast Saskatchewan schools during the first week of school.

The provincial government released data Thursday for the number of tests administered among young people during the first week of Sept. 7-12. It showed that there were zero cases for the southeast region. A total of 112 tests were administered in the southeast.

In South East Zone 4, which includes Estevan and the far southeast corner of the province, there were 42 tests administered, with three test among those four years of age and under, 14 among those ages 5-13, and 25 tests for students ages 14-19.

As for the rest of the province, 14 cases of COVID-19 have been diagnosed among children and youth in Saskatchewan. Nine of the cases are in Saskatoon. Two are in the central west, and one each is in the central east, southwest and south central regions.

A total of 2,090 COVID-19 tests were administered in schools in the first week of the school year.

The Ministries of Health and Education are working closely with the Saskatchewan Health Authority and school divisions to monitor COVID-19 developments within schools and local communities. Parents will be advised if a COVID-19 related risk is identified.

The government says COVID-19 activity in schools will usually reflect the background-level of COVID-19 in communities, so it is important to pay close attention to local COVID-19 activity.

Updated numbers for COVID-19 among young people will be released every Thursday.
