A very successful pilot project that has aided struggling readers at the Grade 6 and above level as well as many others in the Kindergarten to Grade 5 grouping, received a green light for an extension on February 13.

The members of the board attending the business session of the South East Cornerstone Public School Division that day passed a motion to expend $314,300 for the program that assists many students in reading, grammar and comprehension skill building.

“The indications from data gathering shows strong outcomes with the blended program,” said Lynn Little, Cornerstone’s director of education.

With those results, a request was issued to continue the purchase of the program for the next three school years with the money to be allocated from the division’s accumulated surplus.

Weyburn board member Melanie Sorenson said the feedback she received personally after the program’s implementation was solid since earlier efforts to find a program of support “were clearly difficult, and if you don’t have those skills, life’s a challenge,” she said.

Board chairwoman Audrey Trombley pointed out there had been a good period of time when the division enjoyed a “free sample” of what the project delivery team could provide which lead them to this point of accepting the recommendation to continue with the program that was clearly delivering positive results.
