Creighton Lodge report for January

It seems just last week I wrote the column for December and here it is February already. Why are the days going by so fast? Maybe we can explain it with this quote from Cesare Pavese, “Idleness makes hours pass slowly and years swiftly.

It seems just last week I wrote the column for December and here it is February already. Why are the days going by so fast?

Maybe we can explain it with this quote from Cesare Pavese, “Idleness makes hours pass slowly and years swiftly. Activity makes the hours short and the years long.” So as long as we fill our days with lots of activity, time will pass quickly but we will live a long life.

Activity is something we have a lot of around Creighton Lodge. Let’s start with our musical entertainers. We start the month with the Freebies. Ken Geisel, Bob Fichter and George Kuchinka are so good to volunteer their time every month. We love to have them sing for us.

On Jan. 6, we were pleased to host the classical piano and soprano concert put on by McKenzie Warriner and Danielle Guina through the Living Room Live concert group. There were over 70 in attendance. Once again, we thank everyone who helped us raise the money for our lounge addition a few years ago – time and time again we see how valuable it is to our residents and community.

The Caragana Ramblers entertained in January and also Janice Hursh came for her singsong. On Jan. 28, Keith Olson and Gary Dickson came to entertain and Bob Olson finished the month out on the 31st with some great songs after our KFC supper. Thanks to all of the great people who take the time to share their talents with us.

Our exercise ladies are braving the cold to come over here and make sure we keep moving. Thanks goes out to Elaine Walkom, Sharon Dayman and Irene Tarnes who run our programs. If there is someone out there who would like to fill in when these ladies have to be away, please give the lodge a call. We’d love to talk to you.

A big thank you also to Roxy Blackmore from the Estevan Public Library for her Reading and Reminiscing program. This is a relatively new program which is met with great joy from those residents who are attending. They love to visit and talk about life as it used to be.

Our Saintly Six ladies who look after our monthly birthday party and also our KFC dinner cannot go unnoticed. They are six of the kindest, most helpful ladies and we are so fortunate that they offer their time to us. So thanks again to Margaret Mack, Marge Heidinger, Jean Delorme, Doreen Hagen, Sylvia Price and Joanne Bill for all they do for us.

We can’t forget our cocktail party volunteers – a huge hurray goes out to Sharon Dayman, Norma Blackburn and Melodye Pierson for their assistance with this fun activity we have every other Monday.

We have started a Thursday afternoon singing session for those who want to sing and those who just want to listen. There’s a good group who are faithful attenders and they sound pretty good.

On the second Wednesday we get a visit from the Sun Country Hearing Aid clinic to get our hearing aids checked. Some days there are so many folks out here, you’d think they were having a party. It sounds wonderful. We want to especially thank them for coming during the winter months so we can avoid having to go out.

I’ve left a couple of the most important things in life to the end – bingo and church. Our ever-faithful bingo caller Joan Wock is so good to come on Wednesdays and call out the bingo numbers. Her daughter Christina also comes with her dogs to visit some of the residents. Thanks ladies.

Our Estevan Ministerial Association once again pulled through in providing services every Sunday afternoon here at Creighton Lodge. With the cold season here, our attendance may be a bit down but we certainly appreciate the services being brought to us. We also appreciate St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, St. Paul’s United Church and Trinity Lutheran Church for bringing communion and mass to our building.

Our Creighton Lodge family welcomed Rosalia McClement into the fold and we know she is going to settle in very well.

As we persevere through this extremely cold weather, we want to thank the folks who bring all our activities into our building so we don’t have to go out. They enrich our lives immensely and bring a richness to it that we can’t express. God bless you all.
