Creighton Lodge residents enjoy the start to 2020

The new year has been pretty good so far. The weather has been mild, which has allowed us to venture outside on the odd day.

We know there will still be a few more cold days before the spring weather arrives, but we are counting down the days until we hear the birds sing again.

We would like to officially welcome Al Piche to the Creighton Lodge family. Al moved into the lodge in November and has decided to stay. We are very happy that Al has chosen the lodge as his retirement home, he has such a great personality. He loves to visit and has some great stories. It makes us remember the days when Ed Schell would fill our days with conversation.

Al also has a talented young grandson that we hope to recruit for his piano skills for entertainment one of these evenings.

We also welcomed Denyse Hygard to the lodge. Denyse and I used to work together at Estevan Fine Foods in 1987. Wow, the time has flown since those days but the memories are there and it is fun to reminisce. What a blessing it is to have Denyse at the lodge, she loves to visit and is finding out that we love to cook. We look forward to spending Denyse’s retirement years with her as we reminisce about the good ol’ days.

Sharon Dayman, Melodye Pierson and Norma Blackburn came in to pour our cocktails Jan. 6 and 20. Sharon brought us delicious treats to nibble on while we socialized. These ladies are so giving to all of us and ensure we have a great cocktail evening.

Susan Carr has volunteered to lead our exercise sessions. Susan started out on Fridays, but Irene Tarnes came back and so Susan will do Mondays and Irene will continue on with her regular Fridays. Sharon Dayman continues to work us out on Wednesdays while listening to some really fun music.

The melt ball ladies came out and completed their program as scheduled. The melt balls really help with keeping our fingers limber. We recommend every one of all ages keep themselves active, it will help you in your senior years. If you suffer from arthritis, melt balls will be a benefit to keeping your fingers limber.

We had the St. Giles Anglican, Faith Lutheran, Estevan Alliance and the Estevan Church of Christ provide us with our Sunday services in January. Communion services were also provided by Trinity Lutheran, St. Paul’s United and St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Churches. If anyone would like to join us for our Sunday services, please feel free to come to the lodge at 2:45 p.m.

Wednesdays brought us our weekly bingo game with Joan Wock and Bev Holinaty. The therapy dogs arrived so we can all have a little comfort from Christina Wock and her beautiful dogs.  Thank you ladies for taking the time to perk up our Wednesdays.

We also had the Grade 8s from Pleasantdale School come to play a round of Bingo with us and they really enjoyed learning the game. Kids from the Estevan Comprehensive School also came to play Bingo and interact with us. After the Bingo game we went into the lounge and discussed any questions they had regarding the lodge. Two of the students returned a week later to give one of our residents a photo they had taken while at the lodge.

It is so great to see our youth in this community be so thoughtful. Thank you to the schools who think of us when planning their outings.

There weren’t as many musical groups at the lodge in January due to cancellations. We would rather people not come to the lodge if they are ill, so we thank them all for staying home to take care of themselves. We don’t mind not sharing their illness with them. We were lucky enough to have the Olson’s come on Jan. 14. We wish our other entertainers good health and a speedy recovery.

We also had Southeast Eye Care come on Jan. 14 for an educational presentation regarding the health of our eyes. Dr. Sarah Sliva and her staff came for the presentation. Mr. Sliva also saved the day by bringing the screen for the projector. They also checked our eyeglasses and did a few repairs where needed. Thank you for giving us your time, we welcome you all to come again.

The Sun Country Hearing Clinic employees are also regulars in our building. Melanie Tribiger comes to see us and ensures our hearings aids are in good working order. Thank you Melanie and Sun Country Hearing for providing us with this service.

Many at the lodge aren’t that mobile anymore in the winter so you are appreciated for going above and beyond for us.

We had lots of birthdays in January. Marie Bonokoski, Deloris Mehler, Nancy Kleebaum and Lucille Bonokoski all celebrated a birthday. We had our special six ladies come and take care of us on our birthday party night while Dave Kjersem, Rick Elson and Jason Stepp provided the entertainment. Those men sure can play music and we thank Anita Kjersem for always helping us to set these dates up. Volunteers are what help to make the lodge a very special home.
