For the first time this winter, an extreme cold warning has been issued for southeast Saskatchewan.

Environment Canada issued the warning at 9:24 p.m. Monday night. It notes that extreme cold will occur over much of southern Saskatchewan and southern Manitoba.

Wind chills of -40 C or more will be felt over the southern Prairies tonight and Tuesday morning.

“An Arctic ridge of high pressure continues to give frigid temperatures to portions of central and southern Saskatchewan and the southern half of Manitoba,” Environment Canada said.

Temperatures in the -30s, along with winds of 10 to 15 kilometres per hour, will produce extreme cold windchills. Some moderation will occur on Tuesday afternoon, but some regions may experience extreme cold again Tuesday night.

Risks of extreme cold are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.
