Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning for southeast Saskatchewan.

In an advisory posted at 4:27 a.m. Thursday morning, Environment Canada said a period of very cold wind chills is expected.

“An arctic high pressure ridge has settled in over Saskatchewan. Temperatures under this ridge are very cold ... early morning temperatures are in the minus thirties with a few localities sneaking past the -40 mark,” the advisory said.

Even with winds of five or 10 kilometres per hour, extreme wind chill values of -40 C to -50 C are widespread.

Wind chills will moderate somewhat late Thursday morning, but extreme cold is expected to return to most regions overnight.

Extreme cold warnings are issued when very cold temperatures or the wind chill creates an elevated risk to health such as frost bite and hypothermia.

The forecasted daytime high for Estevan on Thursday is -25 C, with a wind chill factor of -40 C. The overnight low is expected to be -36 C, with a wind chill value of -46 C.

The high for Friday is expected to be -25 C.
