Firefighters called to grass fire northeast of Estevan

Members of the Estevan Fire Rescue Service were called to another grass fire on Thursday afternoon.

Members of the Estevan Fire Rescue Service were called to another grass fire on Thursday afternoon.

The fire was located just to the east of the junction of Highways 47 and 361, and when firefighters arrived on the scene, the farmer was already working to douse the flames, and the fire was mostly extinguished.

“We went into the field and extinguished what was remaining of the fire and cleared the perimeter for hot spots,” said Deputy Fire Chief Rick Davies.

The fire department dedicated more than 90 minutes to the call, which was close to the northern edge of the fire department’s response area.

Davies said the farmer was prepared in case of a fire, as the dry conditions are increasing the fire risk during harvest.

He said other fire departments in the area have also been dealing with farming-related grass fires. Davies encourages farmers to be as prepared as possible.

“If anything does happen, they need to call us as soon as possible. The quicker we can get out there, the better off it is.”
