A Boundary Dam employee who has been the subject of a GoFundMe campaign after being diagnosed and hospitalized with COVID-19, has died in a Regina hospital.

Ali Syed, a long-time employee of the power station, died Sunday, according to the GoFundMe campaign that was set up to help him and his family. His wife Misbah gave birth to their third child just days earlier.

The GoFundMe campaign was organized by his family and friends at the Boundary Dam Power Station, with Preston Benning creating the post.

As of Monday evening, it has raised more than $84,000, with a goal of $100,000.

There have been nearly 1,000 donors.

Benning wrote Sunday night that Syed had succumbed to the COVID-19 virus that afternoon. He leaves behind his wife and three young children.

The funeral/burial was held April 26 at the Riverside Memorial Park cemetery in Regina.

Benning wrote that he would be raising the goal of the GoFundMe to continue supporting Syed’s family and newborn daughter.

“Please continue to keep them in your prayers through this difficult time and thank you for all the support thus far,” Benning wrote.

Benning wrote on April 22 that Misbah gave birth to a beautiful baby girl the previous day. By all accounts, Misbah herself and the baby are doing very well.

Before the birth, she got to see her husband.

The GoFundMe campaign was launched in early April, after Syed was hospitalized.  He tested positive for the COVID-19 virus in late March and his health quickly deteriorated.

Throughout the last year, he had been very cautious and mindful of social distancing and wearing a mask.

His wife was nine months pregnant with their third child when he was hospitalized. She also tested positive just weeks before giving birth and was hospitalized, but was later released.
