Highway #13 between Stoughton and Carlyle is undergoing some regular maintenance and repairs, which should be completed before the end of June of this year, depending on weather.

Motorists will see the precautionary signage warning that crews are in the area and posted speed limits of 60 kilometres will be in effect. There will be some delays to travelers and flag persons and pilot vehicles will be managing traffic flow during those wait times.

The maintenance procedure is referred to as seal coating. The process coats the surface with an asphalt based emulsion, which is covered with an aggregate. This application is then rolled and allowed to cure before another layer of asphalt and sand is applied and rolled. Once this application has the necessary time to set, dependent on weather conditions, it is then swept and regular traffic flow can be resumed.

Motorists should pay close attention to signage calling for reduced speeds allowing  extra time for any travel using this route.

Also included in the maintenance is “fogging” the shoulders. This process sees a binding agent applied to the roadway shoulder which bonds the surface, giving the pavement added longevity and reduced maintenance costs.

The repairs are being done by ACP of Acheson, Alberta. More than 30 workers will be involved in the maintenance procedure that will repair the 55 kilometres at a cost of $2.4 million.
