Marilyn Simons, a local accounting professional and vegetable farmer from Alameda, has officially announced her candidacy for the Saskatchewan Party’s nomination in the Cannington constituency.

She and her husband raise their two children in a rural setting and are actively involved in the local community.

Simons has over 20 years in the accounting and tax preparation field, which includes working for an independent firm, being a comptroller for a pipeline construction company and eventually branching out on her own.

She is on the board for the Alameda Figure Skating Club and The Estevan Farmers Market. She sings with her church’s worship team. She helps with Alameda School’s school community council, the Alameda Dam fishing derby and the Carnduff and District Music and Arts Festival.

“She values how her life experiences with farming and the oilfield encompasses much of what this area does and she would like the chance to represent these efforts,” Simons said in a news release.

Simons further explains that her plan is to continue to meet and be with the residents in all areas of this riding, as she feels that it’s important to make strong connections to truly advocate for the people.

Daryl Harrison from the Alida area and Winston van Staveren from the Creelman area are also seeking the nomination.

The nomination meeting will be June 13 at the Prairie Place Hall in Arcola. Registration and voting starts at 5 p.m. The voting will halt at 7 p.m. for speeches, and then resume when speeches are finished.

A person must be a Saskatchewan Party member to vote.

Dan D’Autremont, the incumbent Sask. Party MLA for Cannington, has announced he will retire at the end of the current term.
