Three more physicians are practising in Estevan, bringing the total number of medical doctors in the city to 16.

Dr. Uroos Jabeen has established her practice at the Estevan Medical Group, located in the hospital foundation building adjacent to St. Joseph’s Hospital. Jabeen is originally from Pakistan, and has extensive experience practising in that community. She has been in Canada for five years.

Dr. Neal Cabigon and Dr. Jackie Chou have established a practice in Estevan. Along with Dr. Edward Krickan, who arrived in Estevan in July 2017, the three will form the South East Medical Group.

Krickan, Cabigon and Chou will manage their family medicine practice out of the hospital foundation building. In addition to their family medicine training, Chou and Cabigon also come to Estevan with specialized emergency room training. Both are Saskatchewan-trained physicians having recently completed their residency in Regina.

Jabeen, Cabigon and Chou all started practising in Estevan on Monday. Each one of them were introduced to the community on Friday during interviews with the Mercury.

St. Joseph’s Hospital executive director Greg Hoffort credits a collaborative effort between the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation and the hospital for their success regarding the recruitment and retention of physicians.

“Our community has recently gone through a very difficult time, where access to family physicians was limited, and we are quite pleased that our recruiting efforts have taken hold and our community now has access to a nice number of new physicians, in addition to those who have served our community admirably for a lengthy period of time,” said Hoffort.

Thirteen of the physicians in Estevan focus on family medicine.

Recruiting efforts continue to bring more physicians to Estevan, he said.

Next week’s edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
