Saskatchewan’s tourism ambassador made his first visit to Estevan this year on Wednesday.

Andrew Hiltz, who is the Saskatchewanderer for 2017, was in the Energy City for a store party at CAA Saskatchewan. CAA Saskatchewan, which is a sponsor of the Saskatchewanderer program, is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

Hiltz has been to several of the store celebrations this year.

He also visited the Estevan Soldiers’ Tree Monument and toured the rock formations in the Roche Percee area.

He was particular impressed with the Soldiers’ Tree, which was carved by Alberta chainsaw sculptor Darren Jones, and has been in place for a little more than a year.

“That is a real gem of a monument to have in the city, and with the backdrop of the courthouse,” said Hiltz. “It’s an incredible way to honour veterans.”

While this was Hiltz’s first time in Estevan this year, he is very familiar with the area. Last year he worked at SaskPower’s Boundary Dam and Shand Power Stations for several months during overhauls.

Hiltz said he has enjoyed his tenure as the Saskatchewanderer. He estimates he has travelled 38,000 kilometres this year, which has allowed him to see so much of the province, and meet some great people.

“There have been so many amazing experiences,” said Hiltz.

Next week’s edition of the Mercury will have more on Hiltz and his year as the Saskatchewanderer.
