The Saskatchewan New Democratic Party (NDP) is seeking a new candidate in the Estevan constituency.

NDP Leader Cam Broten announced on Saturday morning that Cameron Robock had been dropped as the local candidate, for comments on his social media account that the party deemed inappropriate.

The NDP has been looking at the social media posts of its candidates since two of them - Mark Jeworski in Weyburn-Big Muddy and Clayton Wilson in Saskatoon-Northwest - stepped down this week for comments on their social media accounts.

"We signed up 53 enthusiastic, brand new candidates," Broten said on Saturday morning. "And it is obvious there was a gap in the campaign’s vetting process, specifically related to social media. Yesterday, I directed my campaign team to take another, harder look at the online accounts of candidates.

"There were two instances that went beyond bad jokes and immaturity. Two candidates crossed the line, and I won’t stand for that. As the leader, it is my responsibility to take action, and I have."

Regina-Walsh Acres candidate Terry Bell was also turfed.

Broten also announced that provincial campaign manager Frank Quennell has been removed from his role. Quennell is a former MP for the NDP, as well as a former attorney general and cabinet minister.

Robock was acclaimed as the local candidate for the NDP last February. He has since been campaigning to become Estevan's next MLA, attending community events and participating in other activities. In an interview with the Mercury on Monday morning, Robock said he respects Broten, the party and the decision they made. But he has also decided to run as an independent.

As for the NDP, they have announced that Tina Vuckovic will be their candidate in the Estevan constituency. Vuckovic is a procurement specialist for the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority.

The provincial election will take place on April 4.

This week's edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
