Cody Davis couldn't imagine his debut for the Power Dodge Estevan Bruins going any better.

Davis, a 16-year-old forward from Alameda, scored twice and added an assist in the Bruins 6-1 victory over the Melfort Mustangs on Friday night at Affinity Place. Davis scored on a deflection 57 seconds into the game on his first shift, and then notched the game-winning goal with 4:18 to play in the second period.

Davis’ second goal came less than two minutes after Colin Schmidt had scored for Melfort to tie the game at 1-1.

Scoring early helped calm Davis’ nerves.

“I was really nervous, and then I got that first one, and then it was good from there,” said Davis.

He also assisted on the final goal of the night, an empty net goal by TJ Irey.

Davis is currently playing for the Moose Jaw Generals of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League. He was called up for Friday night's game because four Bruins were out of the lineup, including his older brother Jayden.

Bruins head coach and general manager Chris Lewgood praised Davis for his effort after the game.

“He played well all night,” said Lewgood. “It wasn’t just the two goals. His effort was really good. He kept it simple, and was great on the forecheck. He’s exactly what we hoped he would turn into, and he’s maybe a little ahead of the pace we projected him at.”

Michael McChesney also scored twice in the win. Ryder Pierson had the other Bruins goal.

Grant Boldt stopped 29 shots for the victory. Noah Giesbrecht made 18 saves for Melfort in the loss.

With the win, the Bruins capped a sweep of the Mustangs in the four games the two teams played this season. It would be surprising to some, since the Mustangs (26-14-4) are nine points clear of the Bruins (22-20-2-1) in the standings.

The Bruins have won four straight games, and seven of their last 10.

The Bruins next action is Saturday night at home against the Nipawin Hawks. Game time is at 7:30 p.m.
