Bruins defeated by Broncos in overtime at SJHL Showcase

The Estevan Bruins dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Humboldt Broncos Monday afternoon in the Bruins first game at the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Showcase in Warman.

The Bruins had leads of 1-0 after the first period and 2-1 after two. Griffin Asham-Moroz scored 10:21 into the first period for the lone goal of the opening frame.

Tristan Shewchuk scored 96 seconds into the middle period to tie the game, but Bruin captain Jayden Davis tallied on a power play with less than five minutes remaining in the period to restore Estevan’s advantage.

Former Bruin Logan Foster scored twice in four minutes in the third to give Humboldt the lead. But Asham-Moroz notched his second of the game with 88 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime.

Broncos defenceman Cody Hough scored the winner 3:16 into the extra frame.

Keenan Rancier had another strong start for Estevan, as he stopped 43 of the 47 shots he faced.

Brendan Forman made 35 saves for Humboldt.

Centre Brady Nicholas, who was picked up from the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Spruce Grove Kings, made his debut for the Bruins against Humboldt. He was held pointless.

The Bruins will be back on the ice tomorrow at 4 p.m. when they face the Kindersley Klippers in their second and final game of the Showcase.
