The Estevan Bruins finished their four games in five nights road trip with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Melfort Mustangs on Saturday night.

Isaiah Thomas scored 30 seconds into overtime and Randy Cooke stopped 46 shots for the Bruins to earn the win in goal.

Bruins captain Jayden Davis scored on a power play 3:26 into the first to give the Bruins an early 1-0 lead.

Melfort scored both of their goals 82 seconds apart in the second period, with Adam Nobes and Ben Tkachuk scoring for the Mustangs.

But before the period was out, Troy Hamilton would score on another Bruin power play to tie the game again.

Cooke faced 16 shots in the first period and 19 in the second.

Both teams had chances to take the lead in the final frame, with Melfort outshooting the Bruins 12-9, but the two goaltenders – Estevan’s Cooke and Melfort’s Shawn Parkinson – shut the door.

The Bruins finished 1-3 on the road trip. They opened with a 4-3 loss to the Nipawin Hawks on Tuesday night, but then suffered consecutive 9-2 losses to the Flin Flon Bombers Wednesday and the La Ronge Ice Wolves Friday.

Estevan (22-21-3-1) still sits in the eighth and final playoff spot in the league’s overall standings, five points clear of the ninth place Kindersley Klippers.

The Bruins next game is Wednesday night at home against Nipawin. The game will start at 7 p.m.
