Bruins score early to defeat Red Wings

The Power Dodge Estevan Bruins opened their latest home and home with the Weyburn Red Wings by defeating their Highway 39 rivals 5-2 on Friday night in Weyburn.

TJ Irey opened the scoring 41 seconds into the game for the Bruins, while Turner Ripplinger and Will Koop also scored in the opening frame to give the Bruins a 3-0 advantage.

Eric Soar’s goal with three seconds to play in the first period put the Red Wings on the board.

The two teams traded goals early in the second period. Bryce Platt scored 22 seconds into the middle frame, and Soar responded for Weyburn 62 seconds later. Those would be the only goals of the stanza.

Michael McChesney’s shorthanded goal 4:52 into the third rounded out the scoring for the Bruins.

Kadin Kilpatrick made 20 saves for the Bruins (20-20-1-2), who pulled within two points of the Yorkton Terriers for first place in the Viterra Division. Yorkton has two games in hand.

Estevan and Weyburn will meet again Saturday night at Affinity Place. The game will start at 7:30 p.m.
