The first meeting of the year between the Power Dodge Estevan Bruins and the Weyburn Red Wings proved to be a great night for the Black and Gold.

The Bruins scored six times in the third period in an 8-2 drubbing of their Highway 39 rivals on Saturday night in Weyburn.

The game was actually tied until the third period. Turner Ripplinger and Ryder Pierson scored in the first period for the Bruins, with Pierson’s goal coming in the final minute. Tristyn DeRoose scored for the Bruins 2:08 into the third period, and Michael McChesney restored the two-goal advantage just over five minutes later. Then the flood gates opened up.

Devan Harrison, who was recently reassigned by the Western Hockey League’s Kamloops Blazers, scored his first SJHL goal with 5:38 to play in the third to give the Bruins a three-goal cushion. Captain Jake Heerspink added to the lead with a goal less than two minutes later.

Then Ripplinger and McChesney scored power play goals 16 seconds apart in the final minute to finish the scoring.

The Bruins outshot the Red Wings 19-6 in the third.
