The Power Dodge Estevan Bruins annual Sportsman’s Dinner was an entertaining evening for the fans who attended the event Thursday night at Affinity Place.

Two speakers provided lots of laughs during the evening. Former NHL forward Jim McKenzie, who was raised in Carlyle and Estevan, answered questions from Saskatchewan Roughriders play-by-play announcer Rod Pedersen, who was the MC for the evening.

Then long-time NHL referee Mick McGeough, who hails from Regina, shared stories from his officiating career.

McGeough, McKenzie and Pedersen returned to the stage late in the evening for a question-and-answer session with the audience.

A live auction raised $40,500 for the Bruins coffers. A variety of items were available, including sports-related trips and memorabilia, as well as items for the home.

McKenzie brought a New Jersey Devils jersey, McGeough brought a 2001 NHL All-Star Game jersey and Pedersen brought a Saskatchewan Roughriders prize pack.

The event was billed as having a pub setting, with wings and pizza served to those in attendance.

Next week’s edition of the Mercury will have more on this story.
