Estevan city council paid tribute to the organizing committee of the recent Home Hardware Canada Cup curling event during council’s meeting on Monday night.

Council members presented certificates of appreciation to the committee members, and Mayor Roy Ludwig read off a letter from Dixie Lorentz, the sponsor fulfillment co-ordinator with Curling Canada.

“Every member on your staff, and on the host committee, did a superior job. They worked long hours, kept up to requests and pulled it all together efficiently, calmly and courteously,” said Ludwig.

She went on to call Estevan a Saskatchewan gem, and Affinity Place a top-notch recreational complex. She also praised the local junior curling program.

“The Power Dodge Curling Centre will have quite a few athletes on the national stage for years to come, because your junior program is that good,” she said.

Lorentz said she met some exceptional people from the Estevan area, from events manager Diane Wenham to safety co-ordinator Helen Fornwald, who co-chaired the committee and was always ready to help.

The different committees came together to make the event happen, Lorentz said.

“I could move to Estevan. That is how great it was working there. I miss working with the team, so I hope that you will consider hosting a Curling Canada event again.”

Council and members of the organizing committee also paid tribute to roughly 200 volunteers in the community who helped make the event possible.
