The South East Aaron Well Servicing midget AA Gold Wings female hockey team opened their season by winning the Saskatoon Challenge Cup during the Thanksgiving long weekend.

The Gold Wings opened the tournament with a 1-1 tie against the Peace Country Storm on Oct. 11. Kiera Pittman scored midway through the third period to tie the game.

It wouldn’t be the only time they’d face the Storm on the weekend.

Their next game later in the day was a 6-0 rout of the Warman Wildcats. Khloe Bedore had three goals and Jaycee McLellan scored twice. McKenna Walls had the other goal for the Wings.

The Gold Wings wrapped up the round robin by doubling up the Regina Rebels 4-2 in their lone game Oct. 12. After the Rebels scored the only goal of the first, Kendra Kotylak and Gracie Hillrud scored in the second to give the Gold Wings a 2-1 lead, and Marci LeBlanc and Bedore tallied in the third for a 4-1 advantage. The Rebels would get one more goal before the game was finished.

In the semifinal on Oct. 13, the GoldWings defeated the Swift Current Wildcats 6-1. LeBlanc and Kotylak scored in the first to give the Gold Wings a 2-0 lead, and then LeBlanc, Walls and Ally Park scored in the second to give Estevan a 5-1 advantage through two.

Bedore had the only goal in the third.

The Gold Wings defeated the Storm 5-3 in the gold medal game. Bedore scored in the first, and added another early in the second. Dalis Prawdzik and Walls tallied early in the second as well to make it a 4-0 game. Peace Country scored three times before the period was out to pull within one.

McLellan scored with six minutes to play in the third to put the game away.

Kara Zelyck was in goal for every game.

Bedore was named to the tournament’s all-star team.

The Gold Wings boast players from throughout the southeast region, and play their home games in Midale.
