Minnesota State junior defenceman Edwin Hookenson, who hails from Lampman, has been named an Academic All-American Third Team for his performance in the classroom and on the ice with the men's hockey team this year.

Hookenson, a three-year letter winner, is a two-time Western Collegiate Hockey Association scholar athlete and a 2018-19 WCHA All-Academic selection.

Named Minnesota State men's hockey's recipient of its unsung hero award for 2018-19, he recorded three goals and seven assists for 10 points and played in all 42 games for the Mavericks in 2018-19.

He ranked second in the nation and led Minnesota State with 97 blocked shots and finished the season with a plus-minus rating of plus-13.

Hookenson is majoring in accounting and finance and owns a 4.00 grade point average.

Hookenson is Minnesota State's seventh Academic All-American this year and the school's 73rd All-American overall.

Hookenson played his minor hockey in southeast Saskatchewan until midget, and joined the Estevan Bruins for three games as an affiliated player during the 2012-13 season, when he was 17 and playing midget hockey.

He then opted to play junior A hockey for the B.C. Hockey League’s Nanaimo Clippers, where he spent three seasons.

Minnesota State, a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, had a school-record 32 wins in 2018-19 as the Mavericks were 32-8-2 overall and claimed this year's WCHA regular-season championship. They won the WCHA postseason tournament championship and earned a spot in the NCAA Division 1 postseason tournament for the fifth time in the last seven seasons.
