Some of the top young female hockey players in the province were in Estevan on the weekend for the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League’s atom league final.

The host Estevan Senchuk atom Bearcats and the Estevan atom Mustangs were joined by the Madville Huskies (comprised of players from Midale and Radville), two teams from Weyburn, and single teams from Swift Current, Rosetown and Lake Diefenbaker areas.

The top four teams from the regular season were slotted in the A pool, while the next four teams were in the B event.

The Estevan Senchuk Bearcats were in the A event on account of their fourth place finish in the league standings. Estevan opened the tournament with an 8-1 loss to the Rosetown-based Western Prairie Redwings, who went on to win the tournament and didn’t lose a game in league play all season.

The Senchuk Bearcats next game was a 5-1 loss to the Weyburn DQ Blizzards. They wrapped up the tournament with a 7-3 loss to the Weyburn Goldwings.

Coach Shawn Madsen said they played well enough to win two of the games, but the puck did not bounce their way.

The Estevan atom Bearcats went undefeated during the weekend in the B event. They opened with a 7-3 win over the Huskies. Then they had two straight 1-1 draws against Swift Current and Lake Diefenbaker to advance to the B final, which Estevan won 4-3.

Coach Wade Grimes said there were very tight matchups all the way through the tournament. The atom Bearcats had good goaltending from Taylor Short, and key goals from Halle Lozinsky and Katie Sauder.

They had a slow start in the game versus the Huskies, but then Grimes said they found their game and weren’t going to be beaten.

It was a great weekend of hockey, Grimes said.

The atom league playoffs alternate through the different communities, and it was Estevan’s turn to host it in 2020.
