The Estevan peewee Bear Cats first two games after the Christmas breaks were a pair of tough games on the road against some solid competition.

The Bear Cats (7-6-3) travelled to Lafleche to play the Wood River Ice Cats (11-2) and lost 11-1 Saturday and 6-3 Sunday in South Saskatchewan Female Hockey League action.

Saturday, the Bear Cats were already down 6-0 when league-leading scorer Morgan Kjersem scored an unassisted marker on the power play 15:53 into the second period. The Ice Cats would score five more before the end of the game. Emmy Rae made 33 saves in the loss.

Sunday, Wood River took a 4-0 lead in the second when the Bear Cats took over. Gracie LeBlanc scored on the power play 12:03 into the second, and the Bear Cats shut the door the rest of the period. They attempted to pull back with another goal 6:40 into the third, with Kjersem scoring on the power play.  But Wood River scored twice, including once on a penalty shot, before Kjersem closed out the scoring, again on the power play. Rae stopped 21 shots in the loss.

The result from their game Tuesday night in Bienfait against Weyburn (5-7-4) was unavailable at press time.

The Bear Cats will lick their wounds and come back this weekend at home to Wood River. Games were originally scheduled for 1:45 p.m.  Saturday and 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Civic Auditorium but may have to be moved depending on the availability of the building.
