Estevan Century 21 U12 Chargers football team coach Matt Schell has been waiting for the team to have a strong start to a game all season.

They delivered that start Saturday against the Moosomin Little Generals.

The Chargers scored six touchdowns in the opening quarter en route to a 59-0 victory over Moosomin at the Woodlawn Athletic Field. It was a 40-0 game after the first quarter and 53-0 at halftime.

The second half was played with straight time.

“This is exactly how we wanted it,” he said. “I’ve been bugging them all week to just get off to a fast start, play a whole game and play it as hard as you possibly can. They finally put it all together, and we were able to come away with a convincing victory.”

Cooper Pukas and Truman Ciepliski each scored three touchdowns, while quarterback Peyton Tendler scored twice and passed for another score.

The coach also praised the efforts of the Chargers defence.

“I told them to just be aggressive and smother them all day. Start with the first play and I’m pretty sure the first play of the game was a sack.”

Schell noted the Chargers haven’t surrendered a point since the first half of their previous game against the Moose Jaw Lions.

“The games like this, they don’t come around very often, so stay with it,” he said. “I’m just happy to see it. Winning is contagious, and we’re going to hopefully get some momentum here.”

The Chargers next game will be Sept. 29 at 2 p.m. against the Assiniboia Rockets as part of Football Day in Estevan.

The Estevan Lions Club bantam Oilers had their strongest game of the season Friday night in Moose Jaw against the Moose Jaw Raiders, but suffered a 27-0 defeat.

Coach Paul Duncan said the defence played a fantastic game. A couple of Moose Jaw’s scores came from interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.

“It was a bounce-back game for our defence in comparison to the week before versus the other Moose Jaw team, the Vikings,” said Duncan. They answered the call and they stepped up, which was great.”

He praised the play of defenders Thomas Harrison and Talys Brock for their play in particular.

But the offence struggled versus the Raiders, after moving the ball well the week before against the Vikings.

The Oilers were back on the field Tuesday evening at the Woodlawn Athletic Field against the Weyburn Ravens. (Results were not available at press time).

Their next game is Sept. 29 at 4 p.m. at home against the Assiniboia Rockets.
