Not to sound like a broken record, but members of the Estevan Golden Eels Swim Club are breaking a few provincial records this year.

In the 9/10 year old girls, Jordyn Tarnes broke records in the 25 metre fly and the 50 metre fly, Alianna Young broke the record twice for the 100m breast stroke and in the 15-17 girls, Teaghan Hack broke the record for the 50 metre fly.

The club will be hosting provincials at the RM of Estevan Aquatic Centre Saturday and a few more records may fall that day.

“I’m excited about (being at provincials),” said Young.

Both Young and Tarnes are still trying to get better even after breaking some records.

“I’m practicing on my dives and not breathing as much,” Tarnes said.

“I’m practicing on gliding more and diving shallower, instead of diving really deep,” Young said.

It’s something they’ve both been working on since they joined the club four years ago, and it’s a good example of what can happen with young athletes when they stick with a program.

Young and Tarnes are looking forward to the chance to swim for the provincial final.

“We’re just going to do our best and swim hard,” Young said.

“I feel like we’ll do pretty good because we’ve had the whole year,” Tarnes said. “We practice over and over again.”

It’ll be a different experience for both of them who each have provincial swimming experience but will be competing at home for the first time since last year’s South Sask Semifinals.

“Lots of family will come and we know our strokes now,” Young said. “Our blocks are different than any other pool.”

Hack is an accomplished water polo athlete with the provincial U17 and U15team and will often train on her own.

The day of swimming will see the pool filled with swimmers from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and then a banquet and dance to follow for the swimmers, who will range in age from 7-17.
