Female hockey teams begin seasons

Several local female hockey teams opened their seasons during the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Several local female hockey teams opened their seasons during the Thanksgiving long weekend.

The Estevan peewee Bearcats went 1-1 in their opening weekend of the season, dropping an 8-3 decision to the Swift Current Ice Cats on Saturday, but recovering to win 7-3 over the Moose Jaw Mavericks the following day.

Both games were played at the Power Dodge Ice Centre (PDIC).

Kaylin Wilhelm scored in the first period against Swift Current, while Julia Durr and Brooke McKinnon scored for Estevan in the second frame.

In the win over Moose Jaw, Brielle Farr scored in the first period for Estevan, and then Durr scored twice and Wilhelm tallied once in the second to give Estevan a 4-0 lead. Durr added one more in the third, while Miley Lockerby scored twice to round out the scoring for Estevan.

Kiera Barker was in goal both games.

The peewees have three games in three days coming up, as they host the Weyburn Gold Wings on Oct. 18 at 8:15 p.m. at the PDIC, the Parkland Fire at 3:30 p.m. on Oct. 19, also at the PDIC, and the Fire on Oct. 20 at 12:15 p.m. at Affinity Place.

The Estevan bantam Bearcats dropped their first two games of the season, 12-0 to the Swift Current Colts and 10-0 to the Regina Tiger Rebels.

Rylie Scott was in goal for both games.

The Bearcats will visit the Parkland Fire on Oct. 20 in Melville.

The Estevan atom Bearcats opened their season with a pair of losses: 7-5 to the Weyburn Blizzard on Oct. 12 and 1-0 to the Weyburn Gold Wings the following day. Both games were played in Weyburn.

The Bearcats will host the Gold Wings on Oct. 18 at 4:45 p.m. at Affinity Place and the Blizzards on Oct. 19 at noon at the PDIC. Then they will have a cross-town game with the Estevan Senchuk Bearcats on Oct. 20 at 1:15 p.m. at the PDIC.
