Female hockey teams impress in league play

The Southeast TS&M midget A GoldWings, which have players from Estevan, Weyburn and other southeast communities, picked up their first league win of the season with a 5-3 victory over the Southeast Cyclones on Nov. 24 in Midale.

The two teams also played to a 2-2 tie the following day in Midale.

The Cyclones scored twice less than three minutes apart in the first period on Nov. 24 to lead 2-0 after one period.

But the GoldWings responded with three goals in the opening nine minutes of the second. Katelyn Muchowski scored a short-handed goal 2:02 into the middle frame, and then Hailey Verheist and Macy Cugnet tallied 2:08 apart to take a 3-2 lead.

The Cyclones scored on a power play early in the third, but Ally Park picked up what proved to be the winning goal with 8:18 to play in the period, and Muchowski added the insurance marker less than two minutes later.

Riley Schultz and Aaliyah McLean shared the goaltending duties; McLean was the winning goaltender.

The GoldWings grabbed the lead 6:04 into the first period Nov. 25 when Jaycee McLellan scored. The Cyclones tied the game with 7:37 to play in the second, but less than two minutes later, Jessica Benning tallied to restore the GoldWings lead.

The Cyclones scored the tying goal with seven minutes to play in the game.

Schultz was in goal for the tie.

The GoldWings record is now 1-3-4.

The Estevan bantam Bearcats dropped a 4-3 decision to the Regina Shamrocks in Alameda on Nov. 24.

McKenna Walls opened the scoring for the BearCats 7:46 into the first period, and then added her second of the frame less than seven minutes later.

But the Shamrocks scored thrice in the final five minutes of the opening frame to lead 3-2, and scored what proved to be the winner with eight minutes to play in the second.

Jacey Farr scored for the Bearcats less than three minutes into the third, but the Bearcats  couldn’t get any closer.

The Bearcats played the Milestone Flyers to a 1-1 tie on Wednesday night in Milestone. Kiley Davis had the Bearcats lone goal, which came in the first period.  

Emmey Rae was in goal for both games for the Flyers (2-5-2).

The Estevan peewee Bearcats received all the offence they needed in the second period in a 2-0 road win against the Balcarres Barracudas on Nov. 24.

Lauren Hassler scored with 5:48 to play in the middle frame, and then Kaylin Wilhelm doubled the Bearcats lead with a short-handed goal 2:12 later.

Riley Scott earned the shutout in goal for the Bearcats (4-4).

The Estevan Senchuk atom Bearcats went into Weyburn and came away with a 6-2 victory over the AtoMc Gold on Nov. 24.

Gracyn Einarson and Miley Lockerby scored less than three minutes apart early in the first period to give the Bearcats a 2-0 lead. After Weyburn scored early in the second to cut the lead in half, Lockerby and Einarson scored again for a 4-1 advantage.

Lockerby added two more goals in the third to put the finishing touches on the win, and on a four-goal day.

Kiera Barker was in goal for the Bearcats (4-1).
