Female teams seasons underway

The teams in the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League are now comfortably underway in their 2019-20 regular seasons.

The teams in the Saskatchewan Female Hockey League are now comfortably underway in their 2019-20 regular seasons.

The South East Aaron Well Servicing midget AA Goldwings opened their season with a 5-1 victory over the host Swift Current Wildcats on Oct. 19. Gracie Hillrud scored their first goal in league play this season, and added another in the third. Khloe Bedore also scored twice, and Ally Park had the other goal.

Swift Current scored late in the third to spoil Kara Zelyck’s shutout bid.

Two nights later, the Goldwings won their home opener, 3-2 over the Notre Dame Hounds in Midale. Dalls Prawdzik scored the winner with 8:27 to play in the third period. Brynn Kuntz and Kiera Pittman also scored.

Zelyk made 14 saves for the win.

The South East TS&M midget A Goldwings, meanwhile, split their games on the opening weekend. They were defeated 9-1 by the host Moose Jaw Mavericks in their first game of the season Oct. 19. Katelyn Muchowski had Estevan’s lone goal late in the second period.

The following day, the Goldwings went into Gull Lake and shut out the Southwest Cyclones 1-0. Presleigh Runge had the lone goal, a power play marker early in the second period.

Aallyah McLean was in goal for both games. She made 18 saves in the shutout victory over the Cyclones.

The South East Bert Baxter Transport bantam AA Gold Wings picked up three of a possible four points.

Their first game was a 3-3 tie with the Warman Wildcats Oct. 19 in Weyburn. Warman led 3-1 after the first period, with Jada Naviaux scoring for the Gold Wings. Goals by Katelyn Thackeray in the second and Jasmine Kohl in the third lifted the bantam AAs into the draw.

The Gold Wings carried over the momentum to the second game, a 6-2 victory over the Wildcats on Oct. 20. Bostyn Runge scored twice, while Kohl, Rori Dickie, Lauren Hassler and Jesse Mielke also scored.

Chloe Sorenson was in goal for both games.

The Estevan peewee A Bearcats played three times in three days, and picked up five of a possible six points.

Their first game was an 8-5 win over the Weyburn Gold Wings on Friday night at the Power Dodge Ice Centre. Ella Fornwald, Presley Hollingshead, Miley Lockerby and Kaylin Wilhelm scored in the final 11 minutes of the first period to give Estevan a 4-1 lead, and then Brooke McKinnon scored twice in the final 40 minutes. Wilhelm and Brielle Farr also scored.

Their next game was a 2-2 tie with the Parkland Fire on Oct. 19 at Affinity Place. Wilhelm had both Estevan goals in the first 15 minutes of the game.

The Fire tied the game with 17 seconds remaining in the third period.

The Bearcats then defeated the Fire 3-1 at Affinity Place Oct. 20. Teanna Trobert, Julia Durr and Farr had the Bearcats goals.

Kiera Barker was in goal for all three games.

The Estevan Bearcats also played three times in three days. They lost 6-0 to the Weyburn Gold Wings on Oct. 18 and 6-0 to the Weyburn Blizzards on Oct. 19, and tied their cross-town rivals, the Estevan Senchuk Bearcats, 2-2 on Oct. 20.

The game was the season opener for the Senchuk Bearcats.
