Golden Eels take top spot at south semifinal; 42 swimmers qualify for provincials

Members of the Estevan Golden Eels travelled to Gravelbourg for the Southern Saskatchewan Speed Swimming Semifinal on Saturday. 

Teams from all over the southern portion of the province were in Gravelbourg, as swimmers competed for a coveted spot in provincials next weekend. To qualify for provincials, swimmers have to place in the top six within their event, and 42 Eels qualified in the following events for provincials, which will be in Estevan on July 28:

Top overall scores for each age category were also awarded medals at semi-finals on Saturday and the following 11 Eels won high point medals:

  • 7-8 boys: Marcus DeLeeuw (silver with 22 points)
  • 9-10 girls: Jordyn Tarnes (gold with 35 points) and Alianna Young (silver with 31 points)
  • 9-10 boys: Blake Andrist (gold with 31 points)
  • 11-12 girls: Emily Tarnes (gold with 32 points)
  • 11-12 boys: Tristan Threinen (silver with 30 points) and Lucas Dzeryk (bronze with 25 points)                           
  • 13-14 girls: Mikayla Hack (gold with 31 points)
  • 13-14 boys: Carson Wheeler (silver with 26 points)
  • 15-17 girls: Taeghen Hack (gold with 35 points)
  • 15-17 boys: Logan Marshall (silver with 29 points)

The Eels also came away as the high point club winner with a total of 685 points, which was a large margin of victory over the second place Weyburn Silver Seals who accumulated 331 points for second place. 

With such a strong performance at semifinals, the Eels have their goal set on winning the high point award and overall top club award at provincials this year for a fifth year in a row. 

Provincials are slated to run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday.

The day will wrap up with a banquet, awards ceremony and dance hosted by the Eels.
