Six local lacrosse players were part of a peewee team that recently won a provincial league championship.

Porter Crossman, Noah Magnien, Kalib Roy, Carson Seemann, MacKenzie Schoenthal and Hunter Wagstaff were members of the South Sask. peewee A Elite squad that won the Saskatchewan A Lacrosse League.

The tournament is essentially for all-star teams. Regina and Saskatoon each sent a team comprised of their best players, while the South Sask. team featured players from Estevan, Weyburn, Moose Jaw and Swift Current.

“They hosted tryouts, and then the coaches picked the kids they wanted on the team,” said Cecile Seemann, who is Carson’s mother.

Tryouts were held in the peewee and bantam divisions.

The South Sask. entry opened the tournament with an 11-0 victory over the Saskatoon Swat, and then they defeated the Regina Barracudas 5-2 in the second game. Their final game was a 6-1 win over the Barracudas to capture the gold medal.

Roy won the Saskatchewan A Lacrosse League top goaltender award and was named to the provincial all-star team.

They weren’t the only local athletes to compete at the tournament, as playoffs were also contested in bantam and midget divisions. Three local players – Chase Foord, Kersey Hollingshead and Nathan Wagstaff – played on the South Sask. bantam team.

They lost 6-2 to the Swat and 8-5 to the Barracudas. Then they dropped an 8-4 decision to the Barracudas to win bronze.

Nathan Wagstaff won the 2019 Saskatchewan A Lacrosse League bantam MVP award.

Kaden Chrest played with the Regina midget Barracudas. They lost 5-4 and 9-6 to the Saskatoon Swat, and won silver.

The Estevan kids did very well at the tournament, according to Seemann.

“We’re hoping that next year more kids will go to tryouts, and hopefully we have more kids that make the teams,” she said.

Seemann noted that she hopes to see an all-star team from northern Saskatchewan competing at next year’s tournament.
