Mermaids enjoy success at provincials

Estevan’s synchronized swimming teams did very well last weekend at provincials with several athletes having a strong showing in their age groups. The youngest and oldest teams with the mermaids performed well.

Estevan’s synchronized swimming teams did very well last weekend at provincials with several athletes having a strong showing in their age groups.

The youngest and oldest teams with the mermaids performed well. In the 16-18 provincial stream category, the Southeast Connections team coached by Brenda Lyons and Kim Neithercut took first place for their routine marks (58.26) and average figure mark of (56.16) for a total championship mark of 114.43. Members of the team were prominent, as Nyla Dyck placed second in figures, Hannah Mantei was fourth at 56.56, Gemma Bittman was fifth at 56.26, Alexis Vandermay was eighth at 56.08 and Marlie Weinrauch was ninth at 55.56.

As a duo, Weinrauch and Dyck placed fourth with a routine mark of 55.36 and were third with a combined routine/figure mark for a championship mark of 112.43.

Mantei was third in the routine with a mark of 55.8 and Vandermay was fourth at 55.46.

Marley Kradovill and Meagan Dammann competed as a duet in the 13-15 age category, placing fourth out of seven teams with a routine mark of 55.10.

Haley Copeland was a solo in the 13-15 age group and she was fifth out of 12 with a  routine mark of 54.46 and had a strong figure mark of 59.39 for a total of 113.86 for third place in championship.

The Southeast Connection had two teams in the 10 and under limited competitive category. The Fire Flies coaches by Shannon Wanner were third in routine with a mark of 43.66 and second in championship with good figure marks. The Sparkle Stars coached by Susan Swirski were first in routine with a 44.0 score.

Five of the 26 competitors were in the top ten for figure marks, Elle Meyers was third (49.50), Charlotte Waldegger was fifth (47.16), Rowan Shier was sixth (47.08) and Sierra Mantei and Sarah Green were tied for seventh (46.91).

This Saturday, the Mermaids will have their Annual Water Show for family and friends. The Mermaids’ final competition is in Saskatoon May 3-4.
