Midget A female teams begin playoffs

The Carlyle midget A Wildcats opened their playoffs with a 5-3 upset victory over the Prairie Storm Thunder in Balgonie on Feb. 11 in Game 1 of their best-of-three series.

Courtney Roppel and Missy Biermann scored in the first period, and Anna McCarthy and Roppel tallied in the second to give the Wildcats a 4-1 lead through two periods. Roppel added her third of the game with eight minutes to play in the third.

Kaili Adams was in goal for the win.

The Thunder responded with a 4-2 victory in Wawota on Feb. 13. Beth McCarthy and Missy Biermann had the goals for Carlyle. Kaili Adams was in goal. 

A date for Game 3 hasn't been announced.

The South East midget A Goldwings finished their season with a pair of losses in Midale against the league-leading Wood River Ice Cats, who finished the season with a perfect 20-0 record.

Wood River won 7-0 on Feb. 9 and 10-0 on Feb. 10.

Riley Schultz was in goal for the first game and Aaliyah McLean was in goal for the second.

The Goldwings will face the Southwest Cyclones in the first round. The Cyclones took Game 1 2-1 in overtime on Feb. 13 in Midale. Jaycee McLellan scored the Goldwings goal.

Game 2 is Feb. 15 in Gull Lake. Game 3, if necessary, would be Feb. 24 in Gull Lake.

The Estevan bantam Bearcats had a 4-4 draw against the Parkland Fire on Feb. 10 at Affinity Place.

Caydence Chapman had Estevan’s first three goals, and then Mckenna Walls notched the tying goal with less than eight minutes to play in the third period.

Emmey Rae was in goal for Estevan.

Estevan finished eighth in the South Division during the regular season with a 6-11-5 record. They will face the Moose Jaw Mavericks (22-0) in the first round. Game 1 will be Feb. 17 in Moose Jaw, followed by Game 2 Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. at the Power Dodge Ice Centre.

Game 3, if necessary, would be Feb. 24 in Moose Jaw.

The Estevan peewee Bearcats tied the Balcarres Bearcats 2-2 on Feb. 9.

Kaylin Wilhelm and Lauren Hassler scored for Estevan.

Riley Scott was in goal.

Estevan (8-9-2) will close out the regular season by hosting the Weyburn Angels in Arcola Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m., and the Ochapowace Thunder on Feb. 16 at the Power Dodge Ice Centre, starting at 1:45 p.m.

The Estevan Bearcats went 1-2 in games in Weyburn on the weekend, beating Weyburn Red 13-2 on Feb. 9, but losing 3-2 and 8-3 to the Weyburn Blizzard on Feb. 10.

Julia Durr had a nine-point game in the first game, with seven goals and two assists. Emma Holzer scored three times, Kaybree Fonstad had two goals and Ryleigh Snell also scored.

Durr had both goals in the first game against the Blizzard. Then Durr, Holzer and Bentlee Fairbrother scored in the other game.

Taylor Short was in goal for all three games.

The Bearcats (15-6-1) will close out the regular season by playing the Weyburn Redwings on Feb. 16 and 17.

As for the Estevan Senchuk atom Bearcats, they had the weekend off. Their final regular season games will be Feb. 16 against the Weyburn Blizzards at 11:45 a.m. at Affinity Place and Feb. 17 at noon against the Weyburn Red. Both games will be at Affinity Place.
